Why i vote for a “NO MOBILE PHONE” event
As a photographer, we are trained to deal with many things during a photo session. Delays, bad weather, obtrusive guest requests, unending interruptions while clicking etc. I can say that i’ve dealt with most of them effectively - i.e. with a smile on my face and a golden word called “PATIENCE” and then came a revolution called as smart phones.
No doubt, that the mobile phone has revolutionized everything from reading the news to watching movies, but when it comes to photography, it makes me crinkle my nose in disdain. It has definitely made the life of a photographer a professional hell!
Today, when i go to cover a wedding or a birthday, there are hundred other mobile photographers who come in my way. Needless to say that by the time i wade my way through the sea of phones, i loose the moment :-( ...Which is why i urge my clients to opt for a mobile free event. Not convinced yet? Here is a list of reasons why you should ask your guests to dump the mobile phone and make sure that they stick to the rules:
1. You pay a photographer a lot of bucks to capture the perfect moment. You do not want him/her to miss it just because some of your guests suddenly jumped in to capture it on their mobile phone.
2.You can ask your guests to bring their mobile phones but refrain from taking any pictures. This has been the most popular choice among my clients. No one can in this age think of stepping out with his/her mobile phone. I would personally skip the wedding myself if i am asked to leave my phone behind. However, just before the ceremony starts, you can ask your host to announce the no mobile photography rule to guests. This will make your wedding/birthday pictures exclusive.
3. You can talk to your photographer and ask him to have an assistant covering the whole event on their phone. Those pictures can then be shared with guests or put up on social networking sites so that your guests can enjoy them. This will give your photographer more control and space to click pictures. However, for this to work, you should make sure that you get your photographer to share the pictures at the earliest.
4. If your guest’s are the “selfie loving type” , you can have a special photo booth where they can go crazy with selfies. This way, they won’t interrupt your special moments and at the same time, they can get their fill of selfies inside the booth. You can request someone in your family to ensure that there are no pictures clicked outside the booth.
5. You can allot a special time during the event for mobile photography. At such time, the photographer can take a break and cool his heals :-) and you can smile at the mobile paparazzi. Ask your host to convey the timings to the guest before the event starts.
I have personally started offering an iphone clicked event to my clients wherein my assistant covers the entire event on an iphone. This has not only made my clients happy thanks to the great quality pictures but it also helps me plan my shoot in peace.
